Kai Chen 13th Asia Pacific Microscopy Congress 2025

Kai Chen

Dr Kai Chen is an ARC Early Career Fellow/Raine Fellow at the School of Molecular Sciences, UWA. He finished his medical and orthopaedic surgery training in China (2007 - 2015). Supported by Australian Government International Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships, he completed his PhD studies (2019) in Bone Biology under the supervision of Winthrop/Prof Jiake Xu, A/Prof Nathan Pavlos, and Dr Jennifer Tickner at UWA. His current research interests include bone metabolism, angiogenesis and osteogenesis, the pathogenesis of bone disorders such as osteoporosis, osteonecrosis, and joint diseases. Dr Chen has recently developed a first-of-its-kind imaging approach, based on ion microscopy, which has enabled the metabolic imaging of single bone cells at the nanoscale. By using a stable isotope-labelled tracer, Dr Chen is interested to advance the understanding of matrix turnover throughout musculoskeletal system and other body systems. Capitalising on this molecular imaging platform, Dr Chen is also actively collaborating with industry partners on drug transport and targeted delivery.
